History

Corrective Services WA, within the state's Department of Justice, runs a system like no other in the country: metropolitan prisons, regional facilities and remote work camps scattered across the largest correctional jurisdiction in Australia. Its Long Service Medal honours the long term commitment and service of the people who staff it, recognising a consistent record of service in upholding order and the safety of the community.

Current and former members are eligible, and the award may be conferred posthumously, so the medal reaches the whole of the profession's memory. The department holds the qualifying period and detailed conditions, and current criteria should be confirmed with Corrective Services WA. Nationally, the state's distinguished corrections members have been recognised by the Australian Corrections Medal since its institution in 2017.

Eligibility

The medal honours the long term commitment and service of members of Corrective Services WA.

The biggest beat in corrections: A WA corrections career can span postings a thousand kilometres apart, and this medal is the department's marker for the people who stay the course. Like its interstate counterparts it is worn apart from the national honours, where the National Medal at fifteen years and the Australian Corrections Medal recognise the same careers nationally. Details should be confirmed with Corrective Services WA.

Order of wear

Corrective services awards do not form part of the Australian honours system. They are worn separately from the national honours in accordance with the agency's dress policy, and on civilian racks they are mounted as a distinct group apart from the official awards.
