History

Between bravery's moments and long service's decades sits the work that actually changes a prison system: the reforms delivered, the programs built, the leadership that makes hard institutions run humanely. The NSW Corrective Services Meritorious Service Medal recognises it, awarded to current and former members whose outstanding service has significantly contributed to the goals and objectives of the service, honouring dedication, leadership and innovation within Australia's oldest correctional jurisdiction.

It is the third award of the corrections suite, worn after the Bravery Medal and before the Long Service Medal, and it plays the same role within the service that the Australian Corrections Medal plays nationally: recognition that the profession's best work deserves a ribbon of its own.

Eligibility

The medal honours the exceptional service and contributions of members of the NSW Corrective Services.

  • Current and former members are eligible who have demonstrated outstanding service that has significantly contributed to the goals and objectives of the service;
  • The medal is the third of the corrections suite, after the Exemplary Conduct Cross and Bravery Medal;
  • It sits outside the national honours system and carries no post-nominal.
The system's builders: Corrections is measured in what does not happen, the escape prevented, the reoffending reduced, and this medal honours the people whose service moves those invisible needles. Nationally the same standard is recognised by the Australian Corrections Medal, and long careers often carry both. Details should be confirmed with Corrective Services NSW.

Order of wear

Corrective services awards do not form part of the Australian honours system. They are worn separately from the national honours in accordance with the agency's dress policy, and on civilian racks they are mounted as a distinct group apart from the official awards.
